Yellowknife - An Oasis In The Wilderness (35-7)

Yellowknife,
the Diamond Capital of North America!
 |
A
vibrant and growing oasis in the midst
of a vast wilderness of northern forest, Yellowknife became
the capital of the North West Territories in 1967, and now is
one of the most visited of all the northern cities.
To visit the city you have to be prepared to drive long distances.
From the intersection of NWT-3 (the road to Yellowknife) and
the Mackenzie Highway you have to take a ferry across the mighty
Mackenzie River and drive 426 kilometres through the wilderness.
Thankfully, there is now a paved road running the last 120-kilometres
from the community of Rae to Yellowknife. There are even rumours
that a bridge will replace the ferry. This will shorten travel
time to Yellowknife significantly, unless you’re held
up by herds of wood bison lounging on the pavement near the
crossing of the Mackenzie River.
We camped at the Fred Henne Territorial Park which is located
across from the airport on a hummocky piece of the Canadian
Shield above the city. It’s a pretty, well treed campground
that has 92 sites, most of which have electricity. It’s
also an easy drive down the hill into town.
