There’s
no better stress reliever than a few days in the RV.
We are going to start
this column with a question, and we want you to take
your time and think about it before you answer. Why
did you start camping?
Back when I was a teenager, my parents sent me to
spend the summer with relatives in Los Angeles, California.
One relative had a pop-up tent trailer and I was invited
along one weekend on a camping trip. I had a great
time – so much so that I tried to talk my parents
into buying a pop-up trailer when I came home. No
such luck.
As I grew older and started working, I saved my money
and in 1970, I bought a Volkswagen Campervan. That
first weekend I went off and had a great time. If
you read one of our earlier columns, you will remember
me waking up to the sight of cows looking in my van
window. I remember making my first breakfast on my
Coleman pump stove, then sitting around the campfire
at night, watching the stars and listening to the
music on the van radio. It was unusually relaxing
and quiet.
My next trip was a little more adventurous. I had
never been to Ottawa, so I decided to go see the capital
of Canada. This was 250 miles from where I lived.
My excitement grew as the long weekend approached
as, after all, 250 miles seemed like along way to
go.
I had a fantastic time in Ottawa, seeing everything
and staying in the campground at night. I had a great
trip and when I got home, I was ready to go back to
work, all relaxed, stress-free and feeling absolutely
great. I eagerly looked forward to my next little
adventure.
Notice
the key words there – relaxed, stress-free, and feeling
great. Did anyone notice that I didn’t have an alarm
clock and only listened to the radio in my van? Camping,
to me, was a means of escaping everything in the work
week, to go somewhere and relax, not to think about
the job. It’s a way to let the stress drain out of
me as I sit back and enjoy the outdoors. There was
no doubt in my mind this was my way to relax. No phone,
no TV, just me, and wide-open spaces.
