Taking
the mystery out of RV and tow vehicle weight ratings.
I
have had a few calls lately from people trying to
weigh their RVs at truck scales. They are either having
a confusing time trying to get it done, or trying
to interpret what the information means.
Many of the large truck stops have a drive-on scale
that you can use to weigh your RV. In most cases,
the cost is somewhere around $10. What is great about
these scales is that they will weigh the individual
axles on the tow vehicle separately. The scale surface
is divided, so you can position each axle of your
tow vehicle on its own section, and the trailer itself
on another. The trailer axles will be grouped together,
but that is usually fine.
The
problems people seem to have most often stem from
the positioning of the RV on the scale. Remember,
these scales are made for weighing transport trucks,
not RVs, so to get an accurate reading, you have to
position the RV a bit differently on the scale than
you would a transport truck. Unfortunately, the person
operating the scale may not appreciate this, and you
may have to inform them accordingly.
