North
America is a fantastic continent to explore, and there's
no better way than by RV.
2003 was a great year
for Wagon Trains. We traveled more than 15,000 miles,
from Newfoundland in the east to New Mexico in the
southwest. In the process of logging so many miles
on the road, it really occurred to me that the destinations
are only a part of any trip in an RV. The journey
itself is a big part of the fun.
Karen and I had plenty of time to discuss this as
we toured the continent. Our first rally was in Forest,
Ontario in early May, then it was over to Cookstown,
Ontario, for ÒTHE RallyÓ in June. Following that,
we left for Newfoundland, leading two great caravans
across that beautiful province. We returned to Ontario
on August 9 and had only four days to get ready for
our Steam Show Rally in Brigden, Ontario.
Brigden turned out to be a rally we would not soon
forget. On our way to Brigden, all the lights in southern
Ontario went off as the eastern half of the continent
plunged into the biggest blackout in history.
We
headed to the rally in our brand-new Dutch Star Diesel
Pusher motorhome, which we had just picked up from
RV Warehouse in Cookstown. Driving along the highway,
we had no idea that the power had even gone off until
we pulled into the Flying J fuel station in London
to find nothing working. We could not buy fuel, nor
could we eat in the restaurant. So, we decided to
push on to Brigden. (Left: Our caravan heading west
on another adventure.)
We could not have been in a better place to weather
the blackout than in our new motorhome. We had propane
to run the refrigerator and stove, and a generator
to run everything else. By the end of the Steam Show
Rally, all the rest of Ontario was back up and running
so apart from that one stop in London, we weren't
affected by the blackout in the least. Thank goodness
for the RV!
Our next stop was the Family Campers and RVers Rally,
held in Fergus, Ontario, in September. It was a short
stay, as our motorhome went into the shop for some
add-ons and upgrades. But only a couple of weeks later
we were off to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Rally.
We had been looking forward to this trip for some
time, due in no small part to a story by James Stoness
that appeared in RV Lifestyle (Volume 32, Issue 4).
We weren't disappointed Ð the trip was wonderful.
For some people, traveling so many miles each year
would be too much, but we love it. When you go to
a rally or travel in a caravan, the drive is half
the fun. Watching the land change before our eyes,
traveling alongside a river or climbing up a mountain.
It's about stopping to have lunch in a small town,
looking at the different buildings, and talking to
the people.
...
Take care & happy RVing
