The Freedom to Explore (Vol.29 No.7)

Every year, as the leaves begin to fall and the crisp Autumn air hints at the coming winter snow, our Road Test teams fill their tanks and head for the sunbelt.

This annual migration, which we all enjoy so much, is a tribute to the remarkable freedom of the North American lifestyle. Not only can Canadians travel without restriction from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific, and as far north as anyone would ever want to drive, we enjoy the privilege of access to the warmer climates because we share this continent with the United States of America, the best neighbour in the world. North America stands alone as the greatest example of friendly relations between two sovereign nations in the world today.

During the month of November, citizens of both Canada and the United States exercised the greatest form of democracy by electing a fresh roster of federal politicians. Those of us who enjoy the RV lifestyle have had access to special Canadian advance polls, so that we could vote for the party of our choice even if we planned to be out of the country on election day. In a world where so many people have to struggle to exercise their democratic rights, we could vote by mail with special ballots available from Elections Canada.

It is refreshing to note that concern for the environment was a key issue throughout North America, and that generally speaking issues close to the hearts of all RV enthusiasts have been addressed with dignity and respect by all parties north and south of the border.
