Touring Time (Vol.37 No.5)

The landscape is in bloom and the wilderness beckons as RV families throughout Canada prepare to take advantage of the brilliant sunshine and long summer days to discover the many attractions along the RV roads to adventure.
In a way, the preoccupation with fuel prices this summer has opened the door to an interesting scenario – families who normally would have planned RV excursions covering thousands of kilometers are re-thinking their touring agenda, and concentrating on scenic and historic destinations closer to their home region.
At RV Lifestyle Magazine, we have adjusted our travel itineraries as well, focusing on areas that we originally expected to drive through on our way to prepare stories on popular east and west coast destinations. We have decided to get off the main highways to explore the scenic routes, and slow down enough to discover some of the places that people miss as they rush to their ultimate destinations. With this in mind, our writers and road test teams have been busy unlocking some of the treasures that lie just off the major RV routes, proving once again that “getting there is half the fun”.
This summer, as Quebec celebrates its 400th anniversary, RV enthusiasts will be overwhelmed with features focusing on the old city as a tourism destination. We decided to take a different approach, sending our intrepid travel writers James and Sylvia Stoness in search of the many attractions in the greater Quebec City region… their travelogue will guide you to some of the most beautiful sights in the province, as described in the writings of the early “habitants”… follow their route to discover some of the places where settlers enjoyed summer vacations four centuries ago!
For our western readers, we have focused on a destination that is too often bypassed by RV travelers. We asked Lynne and Fred Benjamin, who have been touring the region by RV for many years, to describe one of the most unique areas in southern Alberta, Writing on Stone Provincial Park, where ancient tribes left petroglyphs to bring their stories to future generations. Imagine what they might think if they could see the progress that has been made during the last millennium… better still, look around the park and imagine what life must have been like for the original campers in the region.
As the RV industry adapts once again to the changing requirements of camping families, we shine the spotlight on a group of “fuel friendly RV’s” – towable trailers that combine interior space and convenience with lightweight and streamlined designs that represent “the shape of things to come”.
All this, and much more, in our annual RV Touring Issue – so sit back, relax, and join us as we embark on another RV Lifestyle adventure on the scenic routes of Canada’s heartland.
